Chronic Pain
Chronic pain sufferers are those who continue to experience pain despite the fact that their injury has healed. Pain signals remain active in the nervous system for weeks, months, or years. Physical effects include tense muscles, limited mobility, a lack of energy, and changes in appetite. Emotional effects include depression, anger, anxiety, and fear of re-injury. Such a fear may hinder a person's ability to return to normal work or leisure activities.
Pain Can Be More than Just a Symptom
Pain is your body’s red alert, and you should pay attention to what it has to say. Unfortunately, many people don’t listen to their bodies’ danger signs. Ideally, pain is meant to be felt briefly. That stinging, aching, or throbbing sends helpful messages, like "Drop that red-hot pot handle" or "Remove your hand from the hornets' nest." Pain is your body telling you to stop and let your body heal, and after a while, it normally goes away.
But when pain continues, it can affect every aspect of your life. All it takes is an injury that doesn't heal correctly or joint deterioration or nerve damage, and the pain-signaling system breaks down. At that point, your pain isn't giving you a helpful message anymore -- it just hurts and disrupts or incapacitates your life. Chronic pain disrupts work, productivity, activities of daily living, relationships with family and friends, sex lives, and marriages. If you’re a chronic sufferer, you are not alone: A staggering one in 10 Americans reports experiencing regular pain for more than a year. Pain is the Number 1 cause of disability in the United States.
Pain Management without Harmful Side Effects
The majority of our patients are referred by physicians and patients alike. There are generally two types of referring physicians: The first group wants to limit their patients to unnecessary drugs, surgery, and all their accompanying complications and rehabilitation. The second group of physicians refers their more desperate patients, those who are now addicted to pain medications and suffering from Post Surgical Pain Syndromes.
At Alderman Medical Acupuncture of Idaho we see patients suffering from both acute and chronic pain. Acute pain serves as a warning of a disease or a threat to the body and tends to begin suddenly and is usually sharp in quality. Acute pain may be caused by many events or circumstances, including bone fractures, internal disease, muscular overuse syndromes, and childbirth. This acute pain may be mild and last just a moment, or it may be severe and last for weeks or months. In most cases, acute pain does not last longer than six months and disappears when the underlying cause has been treated or has healed. Unrelieved acute pain, however, may lead to chronic pain.
Contact us today to find out how we can help you get on the road to a pain-free life, integrating the centuries-old, proven Traditional Oriental Medicine and the new innovative scientific Acupuncture techniques.
