"After three treatments I feel great. Before seeing you I went to our family doc and an orthopedists for my lower back spasms and elbow pain. Your exam was more thorough than the two of them put together. Thanks again." ~S. Willis, Emmett
Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Licensed Acupuncturist, Diplomat National Board of Acupuncture Orthopedics
Three Decades of Healing
With over three decades of successfully treating patients and caring for the injured, Dr. John Alderman is one of the most experienced practitioners of Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture in the State of Idaho. He is also the director and founder of Acupuncture of Idaho.
His passion for caring for others has been reflected in his career choices from the beginning—first saving lives as a life guard and then saving lives and property as a fireman for the City of San Mateo, and now for almost three decades as a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and Licensed Acupuncturist.
As a fireman, he was in charge of the rescue unit response team. He and his fellow fireman were responsible for saving hundreds of lives by providing the initial medical emergency critical care and the extrication of trapped fire and auto accident victims.
Dr. Alderman was fortunate to gain the respect of Dr. Miriam Lee, who is one of the most respected providers in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the United States. Dr. Alderman's apprenticeship and tutorial process with Dr. Lee proved to provide a formidable foundation in his studies of eastern medicine. Following graduation, he became a Licensed Acupuncturist and was accepted into the Doctoral program of California Acupuncture College, where he received his Doctorate in Oriental Medicine in 1986.
Early in his medical career, Dr. Alderman was honored by the State of California when he was asked to co-author the state’s Acupuncture Licensing Examination, and he later served as an Acupuncture Licensing Examiner and was selected by the State of California and Santa Clara County to serve as a Legal Expert Witness on Acupuncture Protocols and Ethics in the Clinical Setting.
Dr. Alderman was one of the first California Doctors of Oriental Medicine and Licensed Acupuncturists to be certified as a Disability Evaluator and served as a Qualified Medical Evaluator for the State of California.
Now a proud Idahoan, Dr. Alderman brings to Idaho and the Treasure Valley almost three decades of experience, an extensive education in Eastern and Western medicine, and deep respect for our body’s innate abilities to heal itself naturally without prescription drugs and surgery.
Dr. Alderman’s progressive leadership led him to initially write the curriculum for the diplomat medical courses which became the foundation for the National Board of Acupuncture Orthopedics Diplomat Continuing Education Program. He is one of a select few of Acupuncturist to achieve Diplomat status with the National Board of Acupuncturist (D.N.B.A.O.). He has served the acupuncture community at large as President, board member, lobbyist, and chairman of the Educational and Legislative Committees of the Northern Chapter of the California Acupuncture Alliance. Today Dr. Alderman continues to offer courses for continuing education units and lectures physicians, chiropractors, and other allied health professionals on topics related to Oriental Medicine, ethics, integrated/complimentary medicine, and practitioner intention in the healing process.
If your business or group is interested in a fast-paced, informative, and lighthearted presentation, Dr. Alderman provides the following lecture series:
“Think Back:” Back Injury Prevention for the Good Life

Acupuncture Gets to the Point: How it Works and When to Consider Acupuncture

Dr. Alderman is continually increasing his knowledge of both eastern and western medicine. Currently, he is preparing for a lecture series to trial lawyers on “Going Beyond Reasonable Doubt… Proving Soft Tissue Injuries in Vehicular Accidents.”
When not in the clinical setting or lecturing physicians, attorneys or other allied health professionals, you can find Dr. John on his tractor or horses in his home in Garden Valley. He enjoys playing ice hockey, golf, tennis, flying and sailing.
